New Council Members

The Mayor of Monroe, along with three new Council Members, took their oaths of office during the regular Council meeting on December 12, 2023.

Mayor Robert Burns took the oath of office administered by North Carolina Rep. Dean Arp. As Mayor, Burns will serve as the official head of the City government and preside at meetings of the Council. The Mayor serves for a term of two years.

Council Member Surluta Anthony took the oath of office administered by North Carolina Rep. Diamond Staton-Williams. Council Member Anthony previously served on Council from December 2013 to December 2021. Council Member Anthony will serve a term of four years.

Council Member David Dotson took the oath of office administered by Planning Board Member Kenneth Deal. Council Member Dotson was elected by a vote of Council to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore to perform the duties of the Mayor during his absence or disability, in accordance with general law. Mayor Pro Tem Dotson will serve a term of four years.

Council Member Franco McGee took the oath of office administered by North Carolina Rep. Diamond Staton-Williams. Council Member McGee previously served on Council from December 2017 to December 2021. Council Member McGee will serve a term of four years.

STANDING COMMITTEE APPOINTMENTS 

Mayor Burns was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport Commission, Monroe Tourism Development Authority, Monroe-Union County Economic Development Board of Directors, and Monroe-Union County Economic Development Board of Directors.

Council Member Anthony was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: Centralina Council of Governments (COG) (Delegate), Charlotte-Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO), Citizens Appointment Committee, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (Chair), General Services Committee, and Monroe Youth Council.

Mayor Pro Tem Dotson was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport Commission (Ex-Officio), Citizens Appointment Committee (Chair), Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and Public Safety Committee (Chair).

Council Member McGee was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, Monroe-Union County Economic Development Board of Advisors, Parks and Recreation Committee (Chair), and Public Enterprise Committee.

Council Member Gary Anderson was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: Centralina Council of Governments (COG) (Alternate Delegate), Citizens Appointment Committee, General Services Committee, and Public Safety Committee.

Council Member James Kerr was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport Commission (Ex-Officio), Monroe-Union County Economic Development Board of Directors, and Public Enterprise Committee (Chair).

Council Member Julie Thompson was appointed by a vote of Council to serve on the following standing committees: General Services Committee (Chair), Public Enterprise Committee, and Public Safety Committee.
