Thank you in your interest in becoming a Monroe Parks and Recreation Volunteer Coach. The league's success depends on interested parents and members of the community such as yourself to ensure that our participants receive the very best experience possible. As a volunteer coach, we are more interested in your ability to communicate with the children on your team to effectively convey a positive sports experience.
Anyone interested in volunteering as a head or assistant coach, please contact Tyson Carrier, Athletic/Special Events Coordinator at (704)-282-4663 or tcarrier@monroenc.org.
*Head Coaches will receive reimbursement for registration fee at the conclusion of the season for their child (1 per Head Coach). It is the coach’s responsibility to notify Monroe Parks and Recreation if he/she does not receive the reimbursement check within one (1) week after completion of season.
Coaching Responsibilities
-
Have a parents' meeting at the first practice to explain the league's expectations. This is a great time to allow parents and players to meet each other and establish a positive environment.
-
Coaches must be organized and prepared for practices and games. Practice routines and drills must be outlined and organized. For more resources on practice drills please click here!
-
Always keep parents informed about any important league updates including practice times, changes in schedules, cancelations and any changes in the regular season game schedule.
-
Wear appropriate attire to all practices and games. This includes a city-supplied volunteer coach's shirt and an ID badge. Coaches will not be allowed on the bench without a city-supplied ID badge.
-
Know the rules regarding the league in which you are coaching.
-
Remain consistent with our youth league philosophy. The main objective of this league is to teach the fundamentals of the game and help children develop a sense of teamwork, belonging and to have fun!
-
Winning will NEVER be the main objective in City of Monroe Youth Leagues.
Youth League Philosophy
The purpose of our youth athletic programs is to create enjoyable and positive opportunities to learn skills and rules associated with each sport. We would like for all young athletes to learn the fundamental skills, rules, strategies, and discipline associated with each sport provided and to encourage good sportsmanship. Winning will NEVER be the main objective in our youth leagues. All coaches, volunteers, and parents should stress the importance of skill development, good sportsmanship, and fun! The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department strongly believes that each player in our youth leagues has the right to play as a child, not as an adult, and to have fun in sports!
