Public Natural Gas Week

The City of Monroe will observe National Public Natural Gas Week from October 1 - 7, 2023.

This annual nationwide event is intended to build public awareness about the value of having a community-owned natural gas utility, as well as to educate residents on the environmental and cost benefits of using clean, reliable, and affordable natural gas in addition to the cost benefits of natural gas appliances.

The City of Monroe’s Natural Gas Division provides service to nearly 13,000 customers in and around Monroe including Wingate, Marshville, Unionville and parts of central Union County. The City of Monroe is one of only eight cities in North Carolina providing natural gas service, and operates and maintains 514 miles of main line and 43 miles of transmission. As of January 28, 2021 the Natural Gas Division operates and maintains a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Peak Shaving Facility.

“The City of Monroe’s Natural Gas Division is committed to bringing safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas into the homes and businesses of our customers,” said Energy Services Director Rob Miller.

The City of Monroe’s public natural gas utility is good for the community for the following reasons:

  • Local Control: Decisions are made through citizen participation instead of being made in a distant city by people who do not understand local issues, and who are primarily focused on profits instead of service.
  • Competitive Costs: We offer fair and competitive rates since we do not face pressure to pay dividends to stockholders.
  • Economic Benefits: We play a valuable role in helping the City of Monroe and surrounding communities improve the economy by ensuring that local dollars stay at home.
  • Customer Service: As a not-for-profit entity, we focus on service rather than profits. We maintain a close relationship with our customers, and as a result, we are successful in meeting their needs.

There are approximately 1,000 public natural gas systems in the United States serving more than 6 million customers. They include municipal gas distribution systems, public utility districts, county districts, and other public agencies that have natural gas distribution facilities.
