The City of Monroe’s Natural Gas Division is conducting its annual natural gas leak survey and atmospheric corrosion inspection on a portion of the distribution system.

The intended outcome is to provide safe, responsible, and reliable natural gas service to our customers.

This survey began on Monday, September 11, and will be completed by December 15, 2023.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR OUR CUSTOMERS

If you are a City of Monroe Natural Gas customer in Area 1 (pictured below), please be aware contractor crews may be walking the approximate locations of the natural gas mains and services, and checking the natural gas meters in your yard.

Crews will not knock on customers’ doors unless there is an emergency.

WHY THE SURVEY IS BEING CONDUCTED

The natural gas leak survey is a federal regulation enforced by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). A leakage survey with leak detector equipment must be conducted at least once every 5 calendar years.

The atmospheric corrosion inspection is a federal regulation enforced by PHMSA. We must inspect and evaluate each pipeline, or portion of the pipeline, that is exposed to the atmosphere for evidence of atmospheric corrosion at least once every 3 calendar years.

Due to the time frequency requirements for atmospheric corrosion, the City of Monroe combines the leak survey and atmospheric corrosion inspection together, to be completed once every three (3) years.

For more information, or specific questions about the survey, please call the Energy Services Department Administrative Staff at (704) 282-4600.
