The City of Monroe is advising the public to be aware of a potential door to door scam in which individuals posing as salespersons attempt to collect money.

The City has received several reports of individuals targeting homeowners in newer subdivisions. In these cases, individuals posing as salespersons display a handheld device claiming it to be a “meter.” The scammers claim the City is planning to raise utility rates. The scammers claim if the resident switches to their meter, the resident can save money on their utility bill. The City’s electric rates have been consistent since 2018.

Residents have also reported being approached by salespersons urging them to purchase and install solar panels to reduce utility bills. Solar salespersons can be found all over North Carolina constantly trying to get residents to sign contracts or pay deposits after a brief sales pitch.

If you receive an unsolicited visit from these scammers or salespersons, please be aware of the following information:

  • Door to door solicitation is prohibited in the City of Monroe pursuant to § 113.15 of the Monroe Code of Ordinances.
  • Third parties do not represent the City. Third parties often do not represent City of Monroe utility policies and procedures accurately.  For utilities, please work directly with the City of Monroe or your utility provider to verify policies and procedures.
  • City of Monroe employees will always properly identify themselves as such. Employees could have one or all of the following: proper City of Monroe Identification badge, uniform with City of Monroe logo embroidered, operating a City vehicle marked with City of Monroe logo.
  • Never give out your Social Security Number, credit card or bank account number or other personal information to anyone you don’t know.
  • If an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
