The City of Monroe announces the immediate closure of Lee Street between E. Franklin Street and Curtis Street due to a storm drainage system repair.
Access to Curtis Street from E. Franklin Street will remain available by utilizing Henderson Street. Motorists are encouraged to remain alert to possible changing traffic patterns during the repair.
The City of Monroe Street Division began a routine culvert replacement east of 617 E. Franklin Street on October 24, 2024. During excavation, crews encountered contaminated soils in the subgrade of the culvert.
The City of Monroe is working with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to sample and monitor contaminated soils so they may be properly removed and disposed.
Lee Street will remain closed while all contaminated soils are removed and the culvert is replaced. Lee Street is anticipated to reopen on November 14.
