Union County and the City of Monroe are collaborating with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners (NCACC) to host a screening of "The Veteran’s Battlefield," a documentary highlighting the challenges faced by veterans in North Carolina and the efforts to support them. The event is scheduled for Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. (doors open at 6 p.m.) at the Dowd Center Theatre in downtown Monroe and will include free resources and information to support veterans and their families.
"The Veteran’s Battlefield," produced by 100 Strong Productions, explores the obstacles encountered by veterans as they transition back to civilian life, including access to healthcare, employment, housing, and mental health services. North Carolina has the eighth-largest veteran population in the nation, with nearly 700,000 veterans. The documentary sheds light on the crucial role played by county Veteran Service Officers and community leaders in addressing these challenges.
"We are honored to collaborate with NCACC in bringing attention to the pressing issues facing our veterans," said Michelle Marcano, Director of Union County Veterans Services, who will offer a brief introduction at the event. "By showcasing this documentary, we hope to foster a greater understanding of the sacrifices made by our veterans and reinforce our commitment to serving them and ensuring they are aware of the benefits they are entitled to."
The free screening is open to the public and aims to raise awareness and provide valuable resources about veteran services and support. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with local community partners including Charlotte Vet Center, Queen City Acupuncture and Wellness Center, and PTSD Foundation of America.
