Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport Secures Federal Funding for Key Improvement Projects

City of Monroe News Posted on January 06, 2025

The Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport has been selected to receive federal discretionary funding through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP) for two significant infrastructure projects, ensuring critical upgrades to the airport’s facilities.

The projects include:

  • Apron Rehabilitation (Federal Fiscal Year 2026): Focused on repairing and enhancing the airport’s apron to improve safety and operational efficiency. An apron, also known as a ramp or flight line, is a hard-surfaced area where aircraft are parked, loaded, unloaded, refueled, boarded, and maintained.
  • Taxiway A Rehabilitation (Federal Fiscal Year 2028): Aimed at modernizing the taxiway infrastructure to support increased traffic and maintain compliance with FAA standards.

These projects are essential for ensuring the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport continues to meet the growing demands of its users while supporting the economic vitality of Monroe and the surrounding region.

To qualify for the discretionary funding, the City of Monroe is required to contribute a 10% local match based on FAA requirements at the time of the award. Additionally, the airport must meet several milestones, including environmental reviews, design readiness, and the establishment of Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) goals.

City leaders and the airport team are already working closely with NCDOT and FAA officials to meet the following critical deadlines:

  • Apron Rehabilitation: Environmental determination by June 2025 and design readiness by March 2026.
  • Taxiway A Rehabilitation: Environmental determination by June 2027 and design readiness by March 2028.

“These projects represent a significant step forward for the Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport, reinforcing its role as a key transportation hub for our region. We are committed to meeting the requirements and deadlines to secure these funds and enhance the airport’s infrastructure,” said Monroe Mayor Robert Burns.

The Charlotte-Monroe Executive Airport is a vital asset to Monroe, serving as a gateway for business and leisure travel while supporting local economic development.
