The City of Monroe is celebrating National Lineworker Appreciation Day, held on April 18, to honor and celebrate lineworkers and the difficult and important work they do to power our lives.

“These unsung heroes, who brave dangerous conditions and work long hours in all kinds of weather, are the backbone of our electric system,” Rob Miller, Director of Energy Services said. “They are the ones who keep the lights on, and we cannot thank them enough for their hard work, commitment, and unwavering dedication to serving our community."

The City’s electric system consists of 25 field employees who keep the lights on for the City’s 11,825 electric customers with an average response time of 22.2 minutes.

“Our division recently received national recognition for achieving exceptional electric reliability in 2022. This award represents the commitment our lineworkers have to their profession and the residents of Monroe. We’re very grateful to have such an incredible staff,” Eric Howell, Electric System Manager, said.

About 125,000 lineworkers keep the U.S. electric grid operating safely and reliably, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Many of them serve the one in seven Americans who get their energy from a public power provider.

“On National Lineworker Appreciation Day and every day, I’m proud to join everyone in Monroe and public power communities across our state and country to honor these skilled men and women and remind them that we appreciate and value their expertise, service, and sacrifice,” Roy Jones, CEO of ElectriCities of North Carolina, said.
