Tips : Natural Gas Safety

Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas, mostly composed of methane. Because it is a very simple hydrocarbon, its combustion by-products are harmless carbon dioxide and water vapor. Natural gas is lighter than air, and if released, tends to dissipate into the air.

Natural gas has no odor of its own. Chemical odorants are added to the gas so that it can be detected in the event of a gas leak. Many people describe the odor as that of rotten eggs. Despite the bad smell, natural gas is not toxic.

As with any energy source, natural gas must be used with care and respect. Consumers need to do their part to follow recommended safety and operating practices.

For example, consumers should be aware of the following "Don'ts":

  • Never use flammable liquids near gas appliances.
  • Never store aerosol cans or bottles of combustible liquids on or near appliances.
  • Never attempt to bypass safety devices.
  • Never use an oven or range burner to warm a room.
  • Never allow children to play near appliances.
  • Never permit any digging in your yard without first checking with your local natural gas utility or "one-call" notification system.

A natural gas leak can be dangerous so make sure all family members know what to do if they smell gas. If you smell gas:

  • Do not light matches.
  • Do not turn lights on or off.
  • Do not use the telephone.
  • If possible, notify everyone in the building to leave immediately.
  • Call the gas company from a nearby telephone.
  • Do not re-enter your home until the gas company has told you it's safe to do so.
